VINTAGE 70’s & 80’s SUBWAY MANNER POSTERS FROM JAPAN
A series of amusing subway manner posters that appeared in Tokyo sometime between 1976 and 1982.
Careful not to get your bag caught between the train doors.
This poster shows the three types of trouble-making monsters on the train. As you can see, they are taking up space and being annoying. “Asshi-” crossing it’s legs. “Nesshi-” sleeping. “Shinbunshi-” opening up a newspaper when crowded.
Don’t spit out chewing gum on the ground of the train platform. It’ll damage even superman.
Superman reminds us to show the train pass clearly to train station attendant even when flying through the gate. This was back in the day when train stations didn’t have automatic machines to process tickets and passes.
“Are you telling me I look like Santa to you? Boy, you’ve had too much to drink. It’s still October silly.” Behave even if you’re drunk.
Sumo wrestler, trying to get the opponent to safety, by putting him on the proper side of the safety line while waiting for the train.
Space Invader. Damn you, space saving alien. The Japanese men in suits look more surprised by the fact it’s an alien sitting next to them rather than being annoyed by it invading their space though.
Doraemon, cat robot from the future, reminds Dad to keep the dreaming at home and off the train.
Title translates to, “Non-thinker” parodying Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker” to be considerate of others around you on the train.
Kappa, a mythical water-dwelling monster, encourages smokers to endure their nicotine cravings while riding the train. Smoking was permitted on local trains before the ban.
Offer to give up your seat to the elderly and disabled.
Osamu Tezuka’s android hero, Astro Boy saying, “Humans are sure forgetful.” Trying to remind riders to hold on to their belongings.
Goku from Journey to the West saying, “No way, I ain’t smoking.” (on the train)
Popular manga/anime character, “Doraemon” reminds people not to forget your umbrella on the train. This is a common problem because many people in Tokyo buy cheap clear plastic umbrellas at convenience stores when it rains, but often forget them.
No Smoking Time. John Wayne reminding you not to smoke during non-smoking hours. We don’t have a problem with this anymore. Smoking is prohibited on all trains and train platforms in Tokyo.
